Okay, let’s do this.
Short-term investments are literally the only reason I’m not eating instant ramen in my mom’s basement right now. Like, two weeks ago I’m sitting on my couch in sweaty gym shorts in suburban Virginia, AC blasting because it’s still 85° in freaking October, staring at $18k I needed to turn into a down-payment boost before my pre-approval expired. That’s the energy we’re working with here.
Why I Even Care About Short-Term Investments Right Now
I’m 34, I have a dog that costs more than my first car, and I’m trying to buy a house in this insane market—send help. Long-term investing? Cute. Retirement? Lol, ask me in 2045. I needed money to move FAST. Like, “I can smell the closing date” fast.
The Ones That Actually Printed Money (For Me, Anyway)
- 3-month Treasury bills: Boring as hell, but I parked $10k at like 5.3% and literally forgot about it. Felt like adulting with training wheels.
- I Bonds (the ones you can cash after 12 months): Bought a chunk last year when they were paying 9.62%. Yeah, I ate the 3-month interest penalty, still walked away grinning.
- High-yield savings accounts that were doing 5.5% over the summer: Ally, SoFi, whatever—I was account-hopping like a finance bro on Tinder. https://www.treasurydirect.gov

The Short-Term Investments That Made Me Want to Yeet My Phone
Tried 0DTE SPY options because some Reddit dude said it’s “free money.” Lost $3,200 in literally 45 minutes while eating cold pizza. My Apple Watch asked if I was okay because my heart rate hit 148. That was a Tuesday.
My Current Go-To Short-Term Investments (As Of This Morning, Swear to God)
Right now, November 2025, I’ve got money in:
- SGOV (the ultra-short Treasury ETF)—basically cash that pays you to hold it
- A 4-week T-bill ladder because I’m too lazy to keep rolling manually
- A tiny bit in Bitcoin because I’m still American and can’t help myself (don’t @ me)
The One Short-Term Move I’m Embarrassed I Love
Peer-to-peer crypto lending on Hodlnaut before it exploded, then switched to Aave when I got scared straight. Currently making 8-12% on stablecoins and I flinch every time I check the health factor. It’s like financial edging. https://www.ally.com/bank/online-savings-account/
Real Talk: My Rules for Short-Term Investments So I Don’t Ruin My Life Again
- If I can lose 100% of it and still sleep, cool. If not, I don’t touch it.
- Anything that requires me to watch a chart all day is gambling, not investing. Been there.
- Liquidity > everything. I will never lock money up for “higher yield” right before I need it again (looking at you, 2022 me with that stupid CD).

Anyway, I’m rambling. The espresso wore off and my dog just farted so bad I saw it as a sign from the universe to wrap this up.
Bottom line: the best short-term investments right now are the boring ones that don’t give you a heart attack. But if you’re gonna YOLO a little, just… don’t be as dumb as I was that one Tuesday.
What are you doing with your short-term cash right now? Drop it below, roast me, whatever. I can take it.
And if you want to nerd out on current yields, check Treasury.gov or just reply—I’ll send you whatever I’m actually using this week. Talk soon (or don’t, I’m not your mom).
